Football News understands that Lyon have given transfer listed striker Bafetimbi Gomis permission to speak to Newcastle, although no fee has been agreed. Lyon decided to do so after they rejected Newcastle’s initial ‘proposition’ of €7m which we repeat was not an official bid.
Newcastle will prepare a formal offer for Gomis as well as approaching Marseille for Gignac, because they are aware of the latter player’s lack of interest.
Newcastle are expected to lodge this bid in the next 48 hours. Contractual negotiations of course also have the green light and Gomis is now expected to cooperate for lack of any better option to Newcastle at present. In other words, if the terms are right, it appears that Gomis will accept a move to Newcastle.
Although unusual for a club to give permission to speak with the player before a fee has been agreed, in these circumstances, the fact that Lyon what to rid of Gomis as quickly as possible is the reason why.
We stress that no fee is yet agreed between Newcastle and Lyon.
Aston Villa have not taken anymore action yet after making a formal enquiry for the player.
Nothing has changed either during the Villans’ pursuit of Lyon’s winger Jimmy Briand.
