Football News can confirm that Lyon are in complex negotiations with Napoli over the sale of Maxime Gonalons. Despite some reports from Italian media outlet Gazzetta dello Sport today suggesting that the clubs had come to an agreement, Football News understands that there is none such total deal in place thus far.
The Lyon Captain had announced earlier this month that he would be staying until the end of the season but we understand that Napoli have been in constant contact with the player’s agents over the past 4 months. Napoli began their January transfer window foray with an opening bid of €12m for the player which Lyon have received.
Les Gones President Jean Michel Aulas is understood not to have accepted it, wanting nearer to €15m. Rather than rejecting the bid outright, the club has invited Napoli reps into discussions knowing full well that Gonalons already has one foot out of the door.
We are unable to confirm whether a total agreement has been reached yet, contrary to some media reports today.
Should a bid be accepted, a provisional contract is in place which Gonalons’ agents and Napoli have agreed to which should see the player earn between €2.5m-€3.5m a year based on fulfilment of criteria to earn bonuses.
