After France’s 5-2 demolition of Switzerland earlier tonight, we have given each French player a rating out of 10 and a comment about their performance:
Hugo Lloris – 7
Made some solid saves when the game was still in the balance. Could maybe have done better with the first goal, but the second was untouchable. Steady when he needed to be.
Mathieu Debuchy – 5
Probably the worst French player tonight. Defensively weak, getting beaten often on the wing, and played Xhaka onside single-handedly for the second Swiss goal. Needs to improve when France play better teams.
Raphael Varane – 6
Solid defensively, making some good challenges, and his partnership with Sakho looks to be flourishing. Obviously, did not have that much to do.
Mamadou Sakho – 7
Was very competent defensively, making some crucial sliding challenges and blocks at the start of the second half. He was substituted before both of the Swiss goals, so I guess he earns himself the ‘clean sheet’ award.
Patrice Evra – 6
Almost had the game pass him by. Did his defensive duties adequately, and did bomb forward on a few occasions, leading to a good second half chance, but was invisible for the most part.
Blaise Matuidi – 8
Scored a fantastic goal which killed Switzerland’s hopes of getting something from the game just 13 seconds after the restart from Giroud’s opener. Helped completely dominate Switzerland’s midfield, and is the unsung hero in this Les Bleus side.
Yohane Cabaye – 7
Cabaye was smart in midfield as ever, but had a bit of a nightmare in front of goal. His long range shots were off target, and missed an open goal which was easier to score than miss after Benzema’s penalty.
Moussa Sissoko – 9
Deschamps’ decision to leave out Pogba for Sissoko was vindicated today. He was tireless in midfield, helping to break down numerous Switzerland attacks, and was energetic when he broke forwards. Scored a fantastic goal near the end of the match.
Mathieu Valbuena – 7
Wasn’t quite as influential as usual, but still managed to get on the scoresheet in the first half after a thrilling breakaway goal. His role in France’s build up play cannot be understated though, and most of France’s attacks flow through him.
Olivier Giroud – 9
Although he was substituted early in the second half, Giroud still earns a very high rating. He scored a fantastic first goal with a header from a corner, and ran 50 yards to set up the third on the break. Brilliant performance from the Arsenal man.
Karim Benzema – 8
Missed a penalty, but still looks in very good form. Scored an acrobatic goal in the second half, and scored a stunning curler at the death, unfortunately after the final whistle had blown! Looks like he will be a great spearhead of this Les Bleus attack in the rest of the tournament.
Paul Pogba – 7
Didn’t have very long to make an impact, but made a sublime pass to Benzema for the 4th French goal. Was very assured in the short time he had.
Laurent Koscielny – 6
Like Pogba, was not on the pitch for all that long. Was not at fault for either of the two Swiss goals, but France seemed a little less stable with him instead of Sakho at the back.
