Lyon have confirmed the signing of defender Jérémy Morel on a three year contract for free from Marseille.
Morel’s deal with OM expired at the end of the season and he was free to join whatever side he wanted to. The player confirmed that he has rejected the chance to sign for a club abroad to stay in France because his son is unwell and requires certain treatment. Morel rejected a contract extension offer from Marseille and said in his unveiling press conference that the uncertainty surrounding Marcelo Bielsa’s future was a factor in his decision to join Lyon.
Lyon boss Hubert Fournier announced that Morel will be deployed as a left-back, to replace the outgoing Mouhamadou Dabo.
Jean Michel Aulas, the club President, reaffirmed that Alexandre Lacazette would be remaining at the club. He confirmed that Lyon want their transfer business done as quickly as possible this summer and that they are in the market for a quality central defender and a striker. He confirmed that has been in contact with international players from outside of Ligue 1.
He admitted that Marseille central defender Nicolas N’Koulou was someone “we have been following for a long time” and that signing André Pierre Gignac would be “a dream” even if “there are no discussions” at present.
