Official | Barcelona confirm Samuel Umtiti contract extension

FC Barcelona announced today that defender Samuel Umtiti has signed a new contract with the club. The new deal, confirmed this morning, will extend the French international’s stay in Spain until 2023, in a move that takes his release clause from €50m to €500m.

The official announcement from the club called Umtiti a “French wall for the present and the future” and “one of the best defenders on the planet” despite his young age.  In Barcelona the Olympique Lyonnais product has quickly become a fan favorite among the supporters. Umtiti has been heralded for his reading of the game, his physical strength, and his ability on the ball.

Having joined the Catalan club in June of 2016 for a fee of €25m, Umtiti has already amassed an impressive trophy haul over the past two seasons. The central defender won the Copa del Rey in the 2016/17 season and was a key member of the Barcelona squad that secured the La Liga title this season in dominant fashion.

Despite missing time due to a significant hamstring injury and pesky knee problems, Umtiti appeared in 25 league matches. His pairing with fellow defender Piqué played a large part in Barça’s stout domestic defence, conceding 15 goals in the 23 matches they appeared in together.
