How Nancy could be relegated to the 3rd division because of Sevilla

The French football financial watchdog, the DNCG, has announced the preliminary relegation of Nancy to the French 3rd division owing to a lack of balanced budget.

ASNL are claiming that the reason for their lack of budgetary rigour is because of Sevilla’s refusal to pay €3.7m to the French club as a sell-on percentage clause for the Clément Lenglet to Barcelona deal.

This amount represents the 12% sell-on percentage that they believe that they are owed – the Andalusian club are refusing to cede this amount because Barcelona activated the player’s buy-out clause worth €35.9m. In Spain, technically the player himself has to buy himself out of his contract, and thus Sevilla do not view it as their responsibility to pay this sum.

This issue cropped up in 2008 when RC Lens tried to take Sevilla on for withholding the sell-on clause percentage for Seydou Keita to Barcelona. In this case, Sevilla won a ruling from the Court of Arbitration of Sport: a bad omen for Nancy.
